The Flappy Bird Phenomenon

In the middle of the peak of his game’s success Dong Nguyen had decided to take down the game from the App stores. Even though the clear reason for him taking it down was not stated there are a lot of theories why he did it. One suggests that his game got so much hate that it was ruining his simple life.  His game was hated from some people because it resembled to a lot of other famous games and according to the haters it was also very unoriginal and boring. However, the game did not contain certain aspects of other famous games stating obvious copyright. He has been earning thousands of dollars every day from Flappy Bird but others have suggested that is so because he set up fake reviews and bot-powered downloads. Not only has Nguyen got lots of hate but also death threatening tweets even from fans. Another reason for the taking down of the game might be that since he was worried that people were overusing the game and could potentially become addicted to it, leading to misjudging him. Dong Nguyen has pulled the game out from the market insisting it has nothing to do with legal issues and that he was going through a rough patch at the moment. Despite the scandal created over his game, it will not stop him from creating more games in the future.

Flappy Bird has been in the App stores for almost a year but only reached its peak in success in the last couple of weeks, also known as the Flappy Bird phenomenon. The success of the game was very unexpected and sudden. The announcement of pulling the game out of the market angered thousands of people who even threatened to kill him. Nguyen was very disappointed by the effects of his game on the people that he even had to have interviews in secret so no harm could be done to him. His sudden success surprised many people and many accused him of set up bot-powered downloads because he was earning around $50,000 every day. Many other games have been created now that Flappy Bird is no longer available, just to get profit and success like Dong Nguyen had.

“I can call Flappy Bird is [sic] a success of mine. But it also ruins my simple life. So now I hate it.”, “Yes, the #1 makes a lot of visibility, more profits and also getting more haters :-(“ – Dong Nguyen (twitter)
