A huge snowstorm hit Serbia, especially the area known as Vojvodina.More than 1,000 people were stranded. Number of roads were blocked in the northern part. Cars were lined up in large columns which were miles long. Authorities advised people not to travel if not urgent. Thousands of people had to be rescued from the road which links Serbia and Hungary. Rescuing lasted for 15 hours. With winds stronger than 100 miles an hour, vehicles from Hungary and Romania were not able to enter. A helicopter had to rescue two dozen people close to Belgrade and up to sixty people had to spent the night in the vehicles. Predrag Maric head of the interior Ministry's emergencies department said: "It is very difficult, even for machinery. The rescuers are walking toward stranded cars." The Danube river was also inaccessible because the strong wind overturned a barge which was carrying gravel. While Serbs had issues with snow, France and Italy were dealing with rain and floods. Numbers of flood alerts were issued. In the Italian city of Pisa hundreds of people were evacuated after the Arno river almost broke its banks. A 30 meter medieval wall collapsed as a result of the flood, Italian media reports. In France, the Atlantic coast has problem with rain. The sea level rose. The french department of Finistere was put on red alert for high waves and floods. Ten more French departments were also on alert. In the UK this was the wettest January ever recorded.
So as you can see, a lot of countries had to fight with mother nature this past month and global warming is at its strength. Some countries are struggling with snow and some with rain and floods.
